Landscape design costs in Orange County

Design fees in Orange County are a function of scope — how large the property is, how many disciplines (planting, hardscape, outdoor living, pool, lighting, irrigation, drainage) are in play, and how far you need the documentation taken. The answers below are the same ones we walk through in a Discovery consultation.

FAQ HubHomeowner Orange County, CA
How much does landscape design cost in Orange County?+

A focused front-yard design in Irvine, Tustin, or Orange typically runs in the low four figures. A full backyard design with 3D renderings is meaningfully more. A whole-property design with outdoor living, pool coordination, lighting, irrigation, and construction documents for an estate in Newport Beach, Yorba Linda, or coastal OC is more again. We quote a fixed design fee after the Discovery consultation — no hourly surprises.

What does the design fee actually include?+

Site analysis, two to three concept directions, the photorealistic 3D rendering set, a defined number of revision rounds, the planting plan, the hardscape layout, the lighting and irrigation strategy, and the construction drawing set your contractor builds from. The exact deliverable list is written into the proposal so you know what you're paying for.

How does design fee compare to construction cost?+

On a typical Orange County residential project, design fees run roughly 8–15% of the eventual construction budget. The range is wide because small front-yard projects carry a higher percentage (the design effort doesn't shrink to match a smaller build) and large estate projects carry a lower one.

Do you charge for the first consultation?+

Discovery is a paid on-site consultation. It's a substantive working meeting — we walk the site, measure and photograph what we need to start sketching, talk through how the family uses the space, and leave with enough to write a fixed-fee design proposal within a few business days.

Can we phase the design to spread cost?+

Yes. Many OC backyards are built in phases — pool and patio first, planting and lighting later, outdoor kitchen the year after. We design the whole property up front so the phases line up, then issue construction documents per phase as you're ready to build.

Is design cheaper if we already have a contractor?+

Not usually — the design effort is the same. But it can be faster and cleaner: the contractor's pricing input shapes the design as it's drawn, so what gets approved is what gets built without late-stage value engineering.
