Designing landscapes in Orange
Orange is where our design studio is based, and it is one of the more varied cities in the county to design for. Old Towne blocks have deep front setbacks, mature street trees, and homes with real architectural character — Craftsman, Spanish, and early ranch — where a landscape design succeeds by supporting the house rather than competing with it. A few streets away, post-war tract neighborhoods have flat 6,000–8,000 square foot lots with tired lawns, aging irrigation, and backyards that were never planned around how families actually use them today.
Established canopy is the defining site condition in much of the city. Mature camphors, sycamores, and liquidambars create genuine shade, which opens up understory planting that struggles in newer, sun-exposed neighborhoods — and also means root zones, drip lines, and existing grades have to be respected in the design rather than ignored.
Most Orange projects we design center on front-yard renewal with water-wise planting, rear gardens organized as outdoor rooms, and clear circulation between them. We prepare the design, the 3D visualization, and the construction-focused documentation; installation is contracted separately with an independent landscape contractor you select.

Flat rectangular lots benefit most from zoning: a dining terrace, a lounge or fire area, planting depth at the perimeter, and a service zone that hides trash, equipment, and storage. The design defines those edges before any material is selected.
Summer heat and water budget
Inland Orange summers are hot and dry. Planting plans lean Mediterranean and California-friendly, with hydrozoning and irrigation design intended to reduce water demand. Rebate and water-agency requirements vary by project — those determinations are made by the agency, not by our studio.
