The submittal format varies; the underlying logic doesn't.
What does an HOA typically require for landscape approval?+
Most OC architectural review committees want a site plan to scale, a planting plan with a full plant list (botanical and common names, quantities, container sizes, mature size), a material board for hardscape, lighting specifications, and a front-elevation rendering or color photo simulation. Some communities ask for sample boards or material samples at the meeting.
How long does HOA approval take in Orange County?+
Most architectural review committees meet monthly. From submittal to written approval is typically 4–8 weeks for a clean first submittal, longer if revisions are requested. Some Irvine villages and gated communities have weekly or biweekly review.
Can an HOA reject a drought-tolerant design?+
Within narrow limits. California state law restricts HOAs from prohibiting drought-tolerant landscaping or requiring live turf. HOAs can require an aesthetic standard — plant palette, hardscape quality, maintenance — but they can't force you to keep a lawn.
